The Formation Program

The Formation Program

The program of formation is spread over four years, beginning with an initial discernment period and then 3 study cycles in which discernment continues.  The study cycles involve biblical, theological, pastoral, spiritual and liturgical formation;

+  Formation courses are normally held during the September – June scholastic year, with candidates meeting every Tuesday evening and approximately one full Saturday each month.

+  As part of the program, the candidates can be assigned pastoral ministries in locations other than their home parish.

+  The program includes a weekend retreat at the start of discernment and at the end of each of the three years of study.

+  The candidate’s wife is required to attend the discernment period and strongly urged and encouraged to attend the sessions during the three years of study.

+  The formation program encompasses approximately 900 hours of formation time during the four year period; candidates are expected to complete all assignments for each course.  This may involve considerable reading, study and written course work and home work.

+  In addition to the academics program, each candidate is to have a spiritual director to assist him in developing a deeper life of prayer and to help him in his vocational discernment.
